John Butcher: saxophones

Mark Wastell: percussion

Luigi Marino: bowed cymbals, zarb, feedback devices

The trio of John Butcher, Mark Wastell, and Luigi Marino first met in 2022 at the chapel of St. Margaret's House in Bethnal Green, London. Wastell and Marino had begun collaborating in 2018—initially within Mark’s large ensemble The Seen, and later as a parallel duo—focusing on the resonances of metal instruments and a shared sense of time. Following the pandemic, the duo initiated a concert series inviting a different special guest for each performance. The first guest was world-renowned saxophonist John Butcher. In the intimate setting of the chapel, surrounded by metal instruments, John explored their resonant frequencies—exciting the surfaces with his saxophone and forging a bridge between the duo’s sound and his own long-standing interest in resonant spaces. The meeting evolved into a trio, embracing open forms of improvisation that allow the metal instruments themselves to become active participants in the music.

Their debut release, Parallel Streams, was published in 2024 by Confront Recordings.

"The trio with Butcher explores how the Butcher’s ethereal sound waves and his extended breathing techniques, with their short and fragmented percussive sounds, correspond and stimulate Marino and Wastell’s resonant surfaces of the percussive instruments, and create atmospheric, constantly shifting and shaping, larger resonant spaces. Such resonant spaces, unusual locations, and unconventional acoustic instrumentations are Butcher’s long-time interest. The four resonant spaces of Parallel Streams, and especially the 29-minute, third one, invite the listeners to immerse themselves in their deep and delicate, mysterious and imaginative resonances."

"In many moments it reaches the level of acoustic meditation worthy of the AMM masters."

"... this is a perfect trio for deep exploration and unusual yet compelling results. Essential."
